Hakuna raises 1.5 million euros

A few weeks after its foundation, the insurtech closes a successful pre-seed financing round of 1.5 million euros.
The newly founded insurtech Hakuna has raised 1.5 million euros in its pre-seed financing round. The money was provided by Visionaries Club, Discovery Ventures, Klarna founder Victor Jacobsson, Sumup founder Marc Christ and other business angels. The money will be used to launch the Hakuna product: embedded insurance for e-commerce companies. Anyone who buys something online is asked whether they would like to take out an extended warranty or insurance before completing the purchase. If the insurance is needed, Hakuna takes care of everything.
The start-up was founded by Sebastian Jost, Orhan Köroglu and Rupert Mayer, who met while working at used car broker Abracar and previously gained experience in the fields of e-commerce, insurance and fintech. Jost is the former CCO of Sumup and will remain with his old company as a shareholder and "one of its biggest fans", as he said on LinkedIn writes.
"There is currently no simple and scalable way for retailers to integrate insurance products into their eCommerce platforms," explains Köroglu. Hakuna closes the gap and "opens up access to these insurance products for online retailers of all sizes and industries, which were previously only accessible to the top 1% of retailers," says Sebastian Pollok, founding partner of Visionaries Club, on the motivation for the investment.
