Amazon is thus entering the European market for green hydrogen. The investment is intended to be one of many steps that could make the shipping giant CO2-neutral.

Amazon's Climate Pledge Fund has invested in the Dresden-based electrolysis start-up Sunfire. This makes the Saxony-based company the first European player in green hydrogen in which the venture capital fund has invested a budget of two billion US dollars. The companies did not disclose exactly how much money was invested.

With this investment, Sunfire is securing further capital to finance its electrolysis technologies. The Dresden-based company recently raised 195 million euros in its Series D financing round. The company is to receive further funding as part of the "Important Projects of Common European Interest" (IPCEI).

The Dresden-based company develops and produces electrolysers. These systems produce green hydrogen, which energy-intensive sectors such as the steel and chemical industries need for decarbonization. The gas is intended to help companies such as Amazon achieve their climate targets. According to the company, it is a leader in an area that relatively few companies have apparently discovered for themselves: Electrolyzers are still a scarce commodity, although the demand is great. In order to meet the needs of the industry, Sunfire is currently scaling up its production capacity to gigawatts. The company is now also being supported by Amazon.

"One of the most successful companies in the world is now one of our investors," says Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire. "We are the first European company in the field of green hydrogen technologies to receive this trust from Amazon. That makes us very proud." "Amazon has committed to being carbon neutral in all areas of the business by 2040. We are reinforcing this goal by investing in visionary companies like Sunfire through our Climate Pledge Fund," adds Kara Hurst. She is Vice President Worldwide Sustainability at Amazon. "Green hydrogen is a particularly important building block in the European energy mix - and Sunfire can make a decisive contribution to its expansion in Europe with its innovative products."
