Sumup employees want to set up works council

Following the dismissal of 150 employees in the spring, the workforce now wants to organize itself better. Sumup has so far accepted the efforts.
According to information from Finance Forward employees of the fintech Sumup want to set up a works council. One employee has sent a mass email to the company's employees calling on them to campaign for a works council election.
The reason for the works council's efforts is a wave of redundancies in the spring of this year. Sumup made 150 employees redundant, causing uproar among the workforce. Shortly beforehand, the company had given assurances that there would be no compulsory redundancies. "We still have to work intensively on the consequences of this situation today," says Managing Director Michael Schrezenmaier to Finance Forward and admits mistakes in communication. Employees also criticize the lack of transparency in evaluation and feedback procedures.
Sumup accepts the plans to establish a works council. "The right to employee co-determination is part of German law, which has a perfectly clear right to exist," says Schrezenmaier. Planning could begin as early as January.
