The Berlin-based language learning platform Babbel has acquired the browser extension Toucan, which enables users to learn new vocabulary while surfing the Internet. Toucan remains free of charge and complements Babbel's premium offerings.

Berlin - The language learning platform Babbel recently acquired the US company Toucan to expand its existing language learning ecosystem. Toucan is a browser extension that allows users to learn new vocabulary while browsing the internet. The extension translates certain words on visited websites automatically and in context. This method makes it easier to learn words on the side.

By integrating Toucan, we are expanding our range of language learning tools available to learners. This combination of different learning methods reflects the core of Babbel's blended learning approach that leads to language learning success.

Arne Schepker, CEO of Babbe

Babbel's acquisition of Toucan means that the browser extension will become part of the Babbel language learning ecosystem. However, Toucan will remain free of charge. In addition to their self-paced courses in the Babbel app, Babbel also offers live online courses with certified teachers and a selection of over 30 podcast series.

We are very proud of what we have achieved over the last few years and to have contributed to the way the world learns languages online. Toucan's core values have always been based on curiosity, empathy and a desire to make a difference in the world.

Taylor Harlow, co-founder and CEO of Toucan

Toucan was founded in Santa Monica, California, in 2019 and has developed a browser extension that allows users to learn new vocabulary in eleven different languages while surfing the internet. By integrating Toucan into the Babbel ecosystem, users will be able to expand their vocabulary based on their existing Babbel courses or live online courses. While Babbel works on the integration, Toucan will remain under its original name for the time being and will continue to be available to users for free to help them learn languages.

Babbel is an established language learning platform in Europe and offers a wide range of language learning services. Since its founding in 2007, Babbel has aimed to connect people and bring cultures closer through language. Babbel has proven to be effective, as scientific studies show. More than 200 didactic experts create lessons in 14 different languages. These include interactive live lessons, language learning games and podcasts. The Babbel team is made up of over 1000 employees representing a variety of backgrounds. Babbel has already sold over 16 million subscriptions and is helping to bring people together through language.
