Founded in 2011, the start-up offers an additional layer of encryption for data. It is unclear how much Dropbox paid for the service.

Dropbox acquires the IP technology of the German start-up Boxcryptor. Robert Freudenreich and Andrea Wittek founded the data security company in 2011 and announced in a letter last Tuesday that the company would become part of Dropbox. They did not mention any financial details of the takeover.

New accounts can no longer be opened and new licenses can no longer be purchased. However, according to the letter, the data of existing users will remain on Secomba's German servers.

Boxcryptor offers an additional level of encryption for data, known as "zero knowledge" encryption. This gives users control over who is allowed to decrypt the data. This technology has previously been used in many cloud services such as Onedrive, Sharepoint and Google Drive. Freudenreich and Wittek write: "If you are already a customer, you can use Boxcryptor as before."
