Dropbox acquires Boxcryptor

The start-up, founded in 2011, offers an additional layer of encryption for data. How much Dropbox paid for the service is unclear.

Dropbox acquires the IP technology of German start-up Boxcryptor. Robert Freudenreich and Andrea Wittek founded the data security company in 2011, and in a letter last Tuesday they announced that the company would become part of Dropbox in the future. They write nothing about financial details of the acquisition.

New accounts can now no longer be opened, new licenses can no longer be purchased. But the data of existing users will remain on the German servers of the company Secomba, according to the letter.

Boxcryptor offers an additional layer of encryption for data, called "zero knowledge" encryption. This gives users control over who can decrypt the data. This technique has been used in many cloud services such as Onedrive, Sharepoint and Google Drive. To that end, Freudenreich and Wittek write, "If you are already a customer, you can use Boxcryptor as before."
