Fewer start-ups founded between July and September

New start-ups in the innovative and technology-focused sector fell by 30% compared to the previous year.

Around 30 percent fewer new companies with an innovative or technology-focused business model than in 2021 were entered in the commercial register between July and September of this year. In absolute figures, there were 578 new registrations compared to 820 last year. This was reported by the Handelsblatt citing an analysis by venture capital provider Morphais, which in turn relies on data from Startupdetector. There were also fewer start-ups in the first two quarters - more than twelve percent in the first and more than 15 percent in the second.

Venture capital investments, on the other hand, are still at a consistently high level. The German Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (BVK) states that its members invested a total of 2.16 billion euros in the first half of the year. This is more than in 2021, compared to the 3.02 billion euros that the investment companies were able to raise in the first half of the year, according to the BVK.

Although there are fewer start-ups overall, the focus on the deep tech sector is increasing. According to the report, more deeptechs were founded in 2022 (209) than in the whole of last year (207). Deeptechs now account for more than ten percent of start-ups.
