The car giant Toyota is working together with the start-up Zolar. The cooperation could go much further in the future, as Startbase has learned.

Berlin-based solar start-up Zolar could soon be taking a huge step forward with Japanese car manufacturer Toyota. The two companies are already working together to advance the development of sustainable technology for e-mobility. The companies want to combine power generation, power storage and electromobility. So far, the collaboration has consisted of the companies referring to each other. Zolar recommends that customers buy a Toyota e-car in the future. When buying a car, Toyota should point out that an e-car with solar power is more environmentally friendly - and Zolar can help with this. Much more is to come in the future.

The core of the future collaboration: Zolar could soon be renting out e-cars from Toyota, as Startbase has learned. Toyota's first e-car, the bZ4X model, is due to be launched this summer. As soon as this is ready, customers will be able to rent the Toyota car directly via Zolar. The solar system and wallbox would then come with the matching e-car on request.

Homeowners can already use photovoltaic systems - in combination with a wallbox - to charge electric cars with solar power. According to Zolar, it wants to make this easier: Homeowners can use a configurator to plan, configure and purchase their photovoltaic system online. Zolar has already been offering the rental of solar systems since July 2021.

Toyota has also set itself ambitious goals in the field of electrical engineering: The company wants to launch 30 new electric car models around the world by 2030. "The partnership with Zolar and the associated option for customers to charge their e-car with clean and green solar power from their own roof will drive this goal forward even faster," hopes Mario Köhler from Toyota Germany. "The expansion of the private charging infrastructure is a decisive factor for the long-term success of electromobility," says Zolar CEO Alex Melzer. "E-mobility and photovoltaics can no longer be considered separately - only together can we shape the mobility transition holistically."

Alex Melzer and Gregor Loukidis founded the start-up in Berlin in 2016. Greentech employs more than 330 people across Germany. Meanwhile, Toyota was the largest car manufacturer in the world in terms of production figures in 2020. The company produced around 9.53 million vehicles in 2020 alone. Toyota is based in Japan.
