Denton Systems

Why did you found your start-up, what problem are you addressing and how do you solve it?

Teeth are a fragile thing - and not just in childhood: our teeth are constantly changing, whether due to age, stress or dental procedures. The healthy initial situation is often lost and long-term consequences such as craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD syndrome) can occur.
With its patented procedure, Denton Systems has succeeded in digitally "freezing" the dentition and thus preserving its original condition: The lifelong dental concept saves patients a lot of time in the waiting room; doctors can provide more precise and individualized treatment.
How did you come up with the idea of founding your start-up?
As dentists, medical computer scientists and dental technicians in a team, we worked a lot with functional therapy, digital imaging processes and, for example, digital milling machines for the production of dentures. One thing became clearer and clearer: no matter what efforts are made and no matter how much modern technology is used: The original, defect-free denture system can never be 100 percent restored. Both the dentist and the dental technician "work on" the denture system by, among other things, modeling and grinding fillings and crowns, determining bite heights and widths and carrying out splint therapies. The healthy initial situation of the teeth is lost - with far-reaching consequences.

What is special about your business model, what do you do differently?
By digitally "freezing" the entire dental system, combining imaging techniques and providing all data via the cloud, it is possible for the first time to reconstruct a patient's healthy, individual initial dental system regardless of location, time and teeth. In this way, long-term consequences of defect-oriented dentistry such as CMD syndrome and the need to see other specialists can be avoided.
Why are you on Startbase?
We appreciate the Startbase implementation concept. National and international networking, capital procurement and scaling are key aspects of start-ups. We see very good opportunities in the joint realization of these goals.
What have you learned so far?
How much it means to have an open-minded team that is not only ready for innovation and success, but also willing to take risks and stand up for each other. That is very rare.
What would you recommend to other founders?
As a founder, you should never lose sight of your goal, but you shouldn't work towards it with blinkers on either. Just like in science, there is often new evidence that you have to constantly think about, both internally and externally. Everyone can see the success of well-known companies, but the fact that the road to success was accompanied by many failures is often ignored. Entrepreneurs sometimes need a lot of patience and have to realize that they can't achieve everything on their own.
How did you get to know each other?
Most of us are connected through scientific projects related to medical informatics at the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences.
Where do you see yourselves in 3 years' time?
By then, we want to have done more educational work and implemented the first interruption of defect-oriented dentistry. Our lifelong and preventive dental concept is embedded in various selective contracts with health insurance companies or supplementary dental insurances and is moving towards standard care.
Do you still have a social life despite founding a start-up?
Definitely - quite a few of us have already experienced the start-up life. It's also a bit of a lifestyle, so social events now often take place at networking events or trade fairs and movies become pitching events. We also maintain a fortnightly routine of undertaking as a team.
Who is the mastermind in your team and what is their superpower?
Micha is the mastermind of the team, he is bursting with new and brilliant ideas. He would love to implement a new project every day. The team's superpower is to keep Micha focused and steer his never-ending intrinsic motivation in the right direction.
