Unzer goes to Berlin

The payment service provider is relocating its headquarters to the capital, but intends to retain a seat in Heidelberg, where it was founded.
Payment service provider Unzer is in the midst of upheaval. First there was stress with Bafin, then a new advisory board with prominent members and now the fintech is moving from Heidelberg to Berlin.
As the company originally emerged from the fintech "Heidelpay", it was previously based in Baden-Württemberg. However, according to CEO Robert Bueninck, the company now wants to open a new chapter: "Unzer is often still perceived as the former Heidelpay. But that is long behind us. Unzer now unites thirteen companies under one brand, with which we are uniquely positioned in the market. By relocating our headquarters to the German capital and European metropolis of Berlin, we are underlining our growth ambitions and the internationalization of our offering," says Bueninck. However, the location in Heidelberg is to be retained.
The payment provider Unzer, founded in 2009, has now acquired 70,000 customers. KKR has held a majority stake in the company since 2019. At the beginning of the year, the company acquired the Berlin start-up Tillhub in order to grow further. However, not everything is rosy at the fintech: at the end of August, Bafin ordered a ban on new customers and appointed a special commissioner because the regulator had identified several "sometimes serious deficiencies" at Unzer.
