2 million euros for CYNiO

Green isocyanate made in Bitterfeld. CYNiO secures over €2 million and launches CO₂-based specialty chemicals without phosgene on the European market.
News by Marc Nemitz Marc Nemitz · Bitterfeld-Wolfen, 09. July 2025

The chemical start-up CYNiO has completed a financing round of over 2 million euros. The aim of the capital round is to scale up the company's own patented technology for the CO₂-based production of isocyanates and to expand the product portfolio in a targeted manner. The investment comes from bmp Ventures with the IBG Innovation Fund and TGFS Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen. The investors are supporting the company on its path to industrial application and market penetration.

New technology for a central industry

CYNiO is developing a process for the production of isocyanates. This is an essential starting material for numerous products in the pharmaceutical, construction, agricultural and plastics industries, which does not require the highly toxic phosgene. Instead, carbon dioxide (CO₂) is used as a raw material. The process enables the flexible, safe production of even small batches of specialized isocyanates that were previously difficult or impossible to obtain.

With our technology, we are creating access to rare isocyanates - safely, economically and in line with demand.

Michéle Tille, CEO CYNiO

CYNiO's innovation should not only reduce toxic risks, but also enable new applications and products by giving research and industry access to rare isocyanates.

Construction of first production facility in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park

CYNiO will use the fresh capital to build its first production facility in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park. This location was strategically chosen in order to benefit from the established chemical network and industrial infrastructure. The regional proximity to the technology location of Leipzig offers additional potential for the development of marketing and sales.

The production planned there is primarily aimed at European customers in order to reduce existing import dependencies and make the supply of specialty chemicals more crisis-proof and sustainable.

Female-founded start-up with academic origins

CYNiO 2025 was founded as a spin-off of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The company is backed by a team of female founders consisting of Michéle Tille (CEO), Marlene Baumhardt (CPO) and Sophie Riedel (COO). All three bring with them expertise in research and chemical development.

This investment is an essential milestone for our team as we move closer to our vision of initiating the development of innovative end products with our chemical products.

Investors emphasize relevance for Europe as a business location

The financing comes from bmp Ventures, which is investing via its IBG Innovation Fund, and from TGFS. Both investors see CYNiO as a strong example of technology transfer from research to the market.

"With CYNiO, another highly innovative company is coming to Bitterfeld-Wolfen, strengthening Saxony-Anhalt as a chemical location and Europe as a production location," says Ywes Israel, Principal at bmp Ventures. Sören Schuster, Managing Director of TGFS, also emphasizes the potential of the start-up:"CYNiO is an outstanding example of how excellent research in Saxony can be turned into marketable high technology."

Open partnerships and growing interest

CYNiO is already working with research and industry partners on initial application scenarios for its special products. The start-up is open to new collaborations with companies, research institutions and investors who would like to participate in the development and commercialization of innovative isocyanates.

With a clear view to the future, CYNiO wants to make a contribution to making European specialty chemicals more competitive and independent while setting new standards for environmentally friendly production.
