AmphiStar receives 2.5 million euros in SPRIND funding

Upcycling meets chemistry. AmphiStar receives further SPRIND funding for sustainable surfactants.
News by Marc Nemitz Marc Nemitz · Gent, 28. October 2025

The Belgian start-up AmphiStar, which specializes in microbial biosurfactants, has received a further 2.5 million euros in funding from SPRIND, the German agency for breakthrough innovations. The aim is to accelerate the continuous production of its sustainable, microbially produced surfactants.

SPRIND focuses on transformative technologies

The funding from SPRIND underlines the confidence in AmphiStar's disruptive technology. The company has already received funding in previous years: €1.5 million in 2023 and €2 million in 2024. With the funding, AmphiStar will optimize its continuous fermentation technology and accelerate the commercialization of new biosurfactant molecules from its growing library. They are all produced from upcycled, bio-based waste streams.

This renewed support from SPRIND demonstrates their confidence in our vision and technological strength. The funding will allow us to optimize our continuous fermentation process and move to the next phase of commercialization.

Bio-based surfactants without fossil resources

AmphiStar's platform combines synthetic biology with microbial fermentation to produce high-quality surfactants from biowaste. The products are free from fossil and palm feedstocks and offer a scalable, environmentally friendly alternative to conventional surfactants. Applications range from personal care and home care to agrifood.

As one of the final five teams in Stage 3 of the SPRIND Challenge, we now have the opportunity to deliver high-performance, circular ingredients that accelerate the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

Global partnerships drive market readiness

Partnerships with Kensing in North America and Caldic in Europe demonstrate the growing demand for sustainable, waste-based solutions and mark important steps towards market readiness and large-scale adoption.
