AWS launches European Sovereign Cloud in Germany and announces EUR 7.8 billion investment
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. The new cloud infrastructure is located entirely within the EU, is physically and logically separated from other AWS regions and offers European organizations the highest level of sovereignty, control and compliance for sensitive data.
The first AWS region was opened in Brandenburg, Germany. AWS plans to expand the infrastructure across Europe, starting with Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal.
Focus on sovereignty and security
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud offers:

- Operation exclusively by EU citizens: Technical support, customer service and infrastructure management are entirely in European hands.

- Technical and compliance controls: AWS Nitro System, encryption, key management, hardware security modules.
- ESC-Sovereignty Reference Framework: Third-party validated audit reports for clear sovereignty guarantees.
