beteiligungsmanagement thüringen GmbH (bm|t), together with Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Holzland, is participating in the seed financing round of PERCEPTEC GmbH, which was founded in May 2024, with a mid-six-figure sum. The MedTech start-up is developing a novel, software-based solution for the fast and efficient determination of visual defects using a virtual eye test. The funding will be used for market maturity, in particular for further development, clinical validation and medical approval.

Innovation in ophthalmology

The classic eye examination has hardly changed in the last 100 years: It is often inflexible, space- and personnel-intensive and time-consuming. PERCEPTEC aims to revolutionize this approach with a virtual, automated and intuitive test solution that is based on state-of-the-art 3D display technology and can be carried out by the user independently, quickly and in a space-saving manner.

This new procedure should not only simplify the diagnostic process for patients and healthcare professionals, but also be significantly more cost-efficient. According to the WHO, only 36% of the world's 2.2 billion people with visual impairments have access to adequate diagnostics.

Target markets and potential applications

The company is initially focusing on stationary opticians and ophthalmologists in the DACH+ region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland and neighboring countries). Up to 85,000 traditional eye test devices could potentially be replaced there. Due to the high willingness to invest and the unique selling points of the product, PERCEPTEC expects to enter the market quickly.

In the long term, expansion into other European and international markets is planned. In addition, applications in doctor-related facilities such as GP surgeries, health centers or pharmacies are conceivable. Mobile versions are to be developed in future for screening in schools or rural regions with limited ophthalmological care, among other things.

Financing supports market launch and growth

The seed financing from bm|t and Sparkasse Jena-Saale-Holzland forms the basis for further product development, clinical validation and medical certification with the aim of launching the first medical product on the market in 2027. A second financing round is open until September 2025 to attract further private investors. In addition, funding of up to 1 million euros from the FTI-Thuringia Technology program is to be used.

Founded in Jena in 2024, the company was established by Dr. Markus Leicht (CEO), Dr. Ilka Urban and Nico Trinks and is currently supported by four employees. With its software solution, PERCEPTEC aims to replace the traditional eye test with a virtual, automated procedure that offers intuitive operation, mobility and efficient use of space and personnel.
