Calisen launches in Germany: 100 million euro investment for smart electricity meters

The British Calisen Group, previously known primarily in the UK as a leading provider of smart meters, has announced the launch of its first international activities. The company has entered into a partnership with Energy Metering Germany (EMG), a competitor in the meter point operator sector, which was founded by the Octopus Group.

With a planned investment volume of up to 100 million euros, the rollout of intelligent metering systems (IMSys) in Germany is to be accelerated. These systems are considered a key technology for better integrating renewable energies and making the electricity grid more flexible and digital.

New location, experienced management

Calisen has appointed Claus Fest as the first Managing Director Germany for the German market entry. Fest previously worked at EnBW as Head of Energy Business and has many years of experience in the energy and grid sector. He will drive forward the expansion of activities and cooperation with EMG.

From pilot phase to scaling

Calisen and EMG launched a pilot project back in February 2025, during which around 10,000 smart meters were installed. Following the successful completion of this phase, the collaboration is now to be expanded to a nationwide scale. The underlying Meter Services Agreement (MSA) serves as a blueprint for future cooperation between metering point operators and investors.

Calisen has in-depth expertise in the financing, installation and operation of smart meter systems. This benefits not only suppliers, but above all consumers, who will be able to manage their energy costs better in future.

Smart meters are regarded as the central interface for the energy transition. They enable dynamic tariffs, the integration of photovoltaic systems or electric vehicles and promote a more conscious use of energy. Calisen has already successfully helped shape this change in the UK. Millions of households there use smart meters that enable flexible electricity tariffs and self-consumption.
