Capacura invests in foom
Impact investor capacura has announced a new investment in Berlin-based foom GmbH, a start-up that is developing a modular technology for the local processing of organic waste. The solution converts organic waste into usable fertilizer directly at the point of origin and is intended to both reduce emissions and strengthen circular economy processes.
Modular technology for local waste recycling
The solution developed by foom is aimed at places where large quantities of organic waste are generated. These include festivals, sporting events, canteens, food retailers and municipal facilities. Instead of transporting organic waste and disposing of it at high cost, operators can convert it into a usable product directly on site.
The system is based on a combination of a specially developed microbial mix, an AI-supported IoT control system and a proprietary bioreactor. Within a few days, the waste is turned into a soil conditioner that can contribute to soil regeneration. According to the company, this can reduce CO₂ emissions from waste disposal by up to 80 percent compared to the European average.
Biowaste as an underestimated climate issue
Over 100 million tons of organic waste are produced in the EU every year. A large proportion of this is incinerated or sent to landfill. This leads to avoidable CO₂ emissions and the loss of valuable biomass. There is also a high economic burden, as disposal costs and the import of fertilizers increase.
Foom is positioning itself as an alternative to this linear system. Local processing is intended to keep valuable materials in the cycle. At the same time, operators can reduce disposal costs and achieve their sustainability goals more concretely.
Simple integration and wide range of applications
The solution from foom has a modular structure and, according to the company, can be easily integrated into existing processes. Municipalities, event organizers and companies with large volumes of waste in particular should benefit from the combination of cost reduction and ecological advantages.
In addition to CO₂ savings, the product offers long-term benefits for agricultural and urban soils through the recovery of nutrient-rich biomass.
Founding team
The founders Dr. Anike von Gagern and Dr. Kathrin Weiß have many years of experience in setting up and scaling technology-oriented start-ups. With foom, they are pursuing the goal of providing sustainable solutions for ecological challenges and making them scalable.
Capacura focuses on sustainable technologies
With its investment in foom, capacura is underlining its focus on impact investments in areas such as the environment, health and education. The investor supports companies that create social added value and contribute to a more sustainable economy in the long term.
