The start-up wants to offset CO2 emissions from companies with regional reforestation projects.

The Hamburg-based start-up Carbonstack receives half a million euros in seed funding. The capital comes from Swedish business angel Per Liljenqvist.

"By investing in our technology, we can scale up offsetting opportunities more quickly, document them more accurately and acquire new customers," says co-founder and CEO Julian Kakarott. He founded Carbonstack 2022 together with Noah Winneberger, Jesper Kolk and Jann Wendt. The start-up develops regional reforestation projects for companies that want to offset their CO2 emissions. According to the start-up, it has already planted over 45,000 trees in Germany this spring. The focus would be on forest areas that are already suffering from climate change. The company is currently planning projects in the Harz Mountains and in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The founding team has all forests monitored with satellite images and documents the compensation quantities on a blockchain. "Our aim is to make this compensation as measurable and transparent as possible," says Kakarott. With blockchain technology, companies' CO2 offsetting can be documented in a tamper-proof manner and the impact made transparent.
