ENOUGH secures 40 million euros for mass production of plant proteins

The Scottish start-up ENOUGH has received 40 million euros in a significant financing round from investors such as World Fund and CPT Capital. With the aim of producing plant-based proteins, production is to be expanded in order to make a contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in the food industry.
Glasgow/Berlin - ENOUGH, a Scottish start-up in the food sector, has received a total of 40 million euros from investors in a financing round. Among others, World Fund and CPT Capital are behind this investment. The funds will be used to expand the production of high-quality plant-based proteins that enable the imitation of meat products.
ENOUGH's innovation is based on the so-called ABUNDA mushroom protein. This plant-based protein mimics animal products well thanks to its consistent texture and fibrous structure. An additional advantage of this mycoprotein is that it produces around 97 percent less CO2 emissions than traditional beef production.
The market for alternative proteins is a multi-billion dollar market and the ethical and environmental case for plant-based protein sources as an alternative is more important than ever
Jim Laird, founder and CEO of ENOUGH.
ABUNDA mushroom protein is already being used in meat and dairy alternatives distributed globally through partnerships with major supermarkets and fast food restaurants such as M&S and Unilever.
Jim Laird, founder and CEO of ENOUGH, emphasizes that the market for alternative proteins is becoming increasingly important in light of growing environmental and ethical concerns. ENOUGH is the first company in Europe to enable high-volume production of mycoprotein. The current funding will be used to quadruple the production capacity and expand the infrastructure of the factory in the Netherlands.
An innovative process in which mushrooms are fed with sustainably grown grain and then fermented produces food with a high protein and fiber content. This production method uses up to 93% less water, around 97% less feed and produces 97% less CO2 emissions compared to traditional animal production.
Investment in alternative proteins on the rise
Investment in alternative proteins is gaining interest worldwide, as the conventional meat industry has a significant environmental impact. Experts predict that at least ten percent of global consumption of animal products could be replaced by plant-based alternatives by 2035. ENOUGH is taking a leading role in providing high-quality and sustainable protein solutions, contributing to a global change in the food industry.
With the new funding and a clear focus on resource-efficient production technologies, ENOUGH will continue to help expand the possibilities of plant-based protein production and thus make a significant contribution to the transformation of the food industry.
