Scottish start-up ENOUGH has received €40 million in a significant funding round from investors including World Fund and CPT Capital. Aiming to produce plant-based proteins, the company plans to scale up production to help reduce CO2 emissions in the food industry.

Glasgow/Berlin - ENOUGH, a Scottish food start-up, has received a total of €40 million from investors in a funding round. World Fund and CPT Capital are among those behind the investment. The funds will be used to expand the production of high-quality plant-based proteins that enable imitation of meat products.

ENOUGH's innovation is based on the so-called ABUNDA fungal protein. This vegetable protein mimics animal products well thanks to its consistent texture and fibrous structure. An added benefit of this mycoprotein is that it produces about 97 percent fewer CO2 emissions than traditional beef production.

The alternative protein market is a multi-billion dollar market, and the ethical and environmental case for plant-based protein sources as an alternative is more important than ever

Jim Laird, founder and CEO of ENOUGH.

ABUNDA's mushroom protein is already used in meat and dairy alternatives distributed globally through collaborations with major supermarkets and fast food restaurants, such as M&S and Unilever.

Jim Laird, founder and CEO of ENOUGH, points out that the alternative protein market is becoming increasingly important as environmental and ethical concerns grow. ENOUGH is the first company in Europe to enable large-scale production of mycoprotein. The current funding will be used to quadruple production capacity and expand the infrastructure of the factory in the Netherlands.

An innovative process of feeding mushrooms with sustainably grown grains and then fermenting them produces foods high in protein and fiber. This production method uses up to 93 percent less water, about 97 percent less feed and produces 97 percent fewer CO2 emissions compared to traditional animal production.

Investment in alternative proteins on the rise

Investment in alternative proteins is gaining interest around the world because of the significant environmental impact of the conventional meat industry. Experts predict that by 2035, at least ten percent of global consumption of animal products could be replaced by plant-based alternatives. ENOUGH is taking a leading role in providing high-quality and sustainable protein solutions, contributing to a global transformation in the nutrition industry.

With the new funding and a clear focus on resource-efficient manufacturing technologies, ENOUGH will continue to help expand the opportunities for plant-based protein production, making a significant contribution to the transformation of the food industry.
