Eon buys Gridx

The founders go along and continue to work on the business concept of Gridx, only under a new umbrella: The energy company has taken over the majority of the start-up.

They wanted to replace the classic energy supply companies, now one of these groups has taken over the start-up: Eon has acquired a majority stake in Gridx. The two founders David Balensiefen and Andreas Booke are going along and will continue to run Gridx under the Eon umbrella. "With the acquisition of the majority shares in gridX, we are consistently continuing our path into the decentralized and, above all, digital energy world of the next decades," said Thomas Birr of Eon, explaining the purchase. Both sides are keeping quiet about the purchase price.

Gridx, founded in 2016, has developed digital solutions for intelligent charging and energy management of renewable energies. With its Xenon platform, the start-up has created a Europe-wide offering for customers that redistributes energy by matching anonymous real-time data and using AI. Eon is also targeting access to the platform. In addition to a restructuring within the group, the acquisition of the start-up is a "key cornerstone of E.ON's digitalisation strategy", according to the press release.

"Our primary goal since the founding of gridX has always been to generate maximum positive impact through our technology platform," the gridx founders say of the acquisition. And argue that it will allow them to "even better support their customers on the path to a sustainable and decarbonized energy future."

The two companies have been working together since 2017, and Eon just launched a pilot project with Gridx and the University of Duisburg Essen for Intelligent Dynamic Load Management (DLM) systems in Essen. It relieves charging station customers of the need to type in departure and standing times by having an AI calculate all the necessary data.
