Finnish startup develops malleable, strong and fully recyclable wood fiber alternative to plastic

Vantaa, Finland, April 1, 2025 - Finnish material technology startup Fiberdom has closed a €3.5 million funding round to further develop and scale its patented plastic-free wood fiber technology. The round was led by Heino Group, with participation from Nordic Foodtech VC and Holdix Oy. In addition, Fiberdom received a grant of 600,000 euros from Business Finland.

Super material based on wood fibers

Fiberdom's technology transforms pulp and cardboard into a durable, malleable and 100% plastic-free material. It is cost-efficient, recyclable, home-compostable and already successfully used in the production of plastic-free cutlery. The company is now planning to expand its innovation into other growth segments such as food packaging, durable packaging solutions and furniture applications.

We have tested our material intensively and discovered enormous potential. The support from new and existing investors confirms the value of what we are building: a future with better materials that do not use plastic.

Tomi Järvenpää, General Manager of Fiberdom

Growing demand for plastic-free solutions

The global demand for plastic-free materials is growing rapidly. The market for fiber-based packaging alone is forecast to grow from 407 billion US dollars in 2025 to 567 billion US dollars by 2034. At the same time, companies and regulations are increasingly being pushed to find sustainable alternatives to plastic.

The demand for sustainable alternatives is huge, especially in food packaging and to-go cutlery. Fiberdom's technology offers the four key advantages: Functionality, scalability, sustainability and recyclability.

Pekka Siivonen-Uotila, Partner at Nordic Foodtech VC

"We have proven that our technology works commercially - now is the time to transform entire product categories," explains Järvenpää. "The material revolution is in full swing and this investment will allow us to significantly accelerate our contribution to reducing non-essential plastics."
