Financing boom for German biotechs

The industry was able to collect around 2.3 billion euros last year. That is almost a record.
German biotechs were able to collect a total of 2.3 billion euros last year. 2021 was thus the second-strongest year in history for biotechs in Germany, the BIO Deutschland association announced. More investments were only made in the record year 2020, when investors invested around three billion euros.
Private biotechs were able to raise around 851 million euros in venture capital. Public companies in the sector raised capital of around 748 million euros. Particularly notable was therapy developer Emergence Therapeutics, which received 87 million euros in a Series A financing round.
Oliver Schacht, CEO of BIO Deutschland, says that while the financing situation in the German biotech sector is developing positively, there is still plenty of room for improvement to make Germany a leading location for biotechnology. "The traffic light government should now make biotechnology a top priority so that we can soon tell even more success stories, not only in the field of health, but to combat climate change, as well as in sustainable biobased production, circular economy and nutrition," says Schacht.
