Finnish InfraTech startup Groundhawk receives 2 million euros
The Finnish infrastructure technology company Groundhawk has closed a seed financing round of 2 million euros. The round was led by Greencode Ventures and 2C Ventures. The startup plans to use the capital to roll out its AI-based platform for the real-time detection of underground infrastructure across Europe and further develop the technology.
Digitalization of a previously analogue problem
When expanding electricity grids, fiber optic lines or charging infrastructure, underground lines have often only been surveyed after construction work has been completed. Sometimes inaccurately and with a considerable delay. Worldwide, this causes damage, delays and safety risks amounting to hundreds of billions of euros per year.
This is where the Groundhawk approach comes in. Construction teams record cables, pipes and connection points during the open construction phase using AI-supported 3D recording. The data is documented with centimeter-level precision and transferred directly to a cloud platform.
Combination of satellite positioning, 3D scanning and AI analysis
The technology combines high-precision GNSS satellite positioning with 3D scanning and AI-supported analysis. This means that documentation is no longer just a downstream administrative act, but part of quality assurance in the construction process itself.
Project managers can check installations immediately, correct errors directly and receive a complete digital image of the infrastructure even before the trench is closed. According to the company, this reduces surveying costs by up to 50 percent and avoids time-consuming rework.
Easy to use directly on the construction site
In contrast to traditional surveying methods, the solution is deliberately designed for existing construction site teams. Specialized surveying operations are no longer necessary, as the data can be recorded directly by the construction personnel using mobile devices. The start-up aims to speed up infrastructure projects and increase data quality at the same time.
Tailwind from massive network expansion in Europe
The timing of the financing coincides with a phase of enormous infrastructure investment. In the coming years, large sums will flow into electricity grids, fiber optic connections, charging infrastructure for e-mobility and the integration of renewable energies across Europe and in the USA.
Groundhawk addresses a structural efficiency problem: more than 20 percent of the costs of many infrastructure projects are caused by missing or incorrect data, coordination problems and necessary rework.
Only a minor problem in Germany
In Germany, this is only a very small niche, as either the pipelines are surveyed promptly when they are laid in trenches or there are no open trenches at all. Where the terrain allows, traditional civil engineering works with cable plows, drilling and drilling and pouring methods. This means that hardly any traces of the installation can be found after the construction crew has finished. Only in challenging stony soils is there a short delay when opening the trench using a trench cutter. The technology could be particularly exciting in this country for cables that are only found during civil engineering work and have not yet been properly surveyed.
First major customers from energy and telecommunications projects
The solution is already being used by infrastructure operators and construction companies in northern and central Europe, including Eltel Networks. These in turn work for network operators such as Telia, Telenor and E.ON.
In addition to cost benefits, the company also emphasizes sustainability effects: less rework, reduced construction site trips and a "first-time-right" installation reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
Scaling in central European markets planned
In particular, Groundhawk intends to use the financing to
- establish a scalable B2B sales structure in Germany, the UK, Benelux and the Nordic countries
- expand its engineering team and develop AI and spatial intelligence functions
- develop new applications that support planning and quality assurance in addition to construction documentation
In the long term, the company wants to establish itself as the standard platform for digital infrastructure data and construction quality management in Europe.
