Insect food for German pets

Swedish foodtech Petgood wants to accelerate the transition to the dog and cat food of the future with a financing round behind it - and is now bringing its insect-based pet food to Germany.
Pet food start-up Petgood from Sweden has announced the completion of a seed financing round worth 2.5 million euros. The company produces sustainable pet food made from insect proteins. Petgood is now using the funds to expand into Germany and plans to make further investments in research and development.
Cats and dogs are the most popular pets. In Germany alone, there are a total of 27 million cats and dogs. The pets living in this country eat one million tons of meat every year; in the USA, animals consume around a quarter of meat production.
"We want all dogs and cats to enjoy the benefits of insect-based pet food - free from antibiotics and for the benefit of health and the climate," says Petgood founder and CEO Pernilla Westergren.
Analyses by the Technical University of Munich and the German Institute of Food Technologies have shown both the health and environmental benefits of insect-based pet food compared to conventional alternatives.
Westergren founded Petgood in 2020. The start-up initially focused on dog food, before adding cat food to the range two years later.
