The Swedish eFuel company Liquid Wind has received a grant of 3.6 million euros (39 million SEK) from the Swedish Energy Agency's Industriklivet program, which supports the green transition of the industry. The funds will be used for the pre-engineering phase of a large-scale eMethanol plant in Örnsköldsvik in northern Sweden.

Basis created for investment decision

The Swedish Energy Agency sees the project as a key step towards a future investment in the planned eFuel plant. This is intended to replace fossil fuels in sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as shipping, aviation and the chemical industry, and thus make a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions.

According to the agency, the project fits in perfectly with Industriklivet's goals of accelerating the industrial transition towards a lower-carbon and more sustainable economy.

Integration into Övik Energi's circular energy system

The planned plant will be integrated into Övik Energi's biofuel-fired cogeneration plant, creating a highly efficient, circular energy system. Using renewable electricity, green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis and combined with 150,000 tons of biogenic CO₂ from the plant. The result: 100,000 tons of eMethanol per year, with which 200,000 tons of CO₂e can be avoided annually.

The biomass comes primarily from waste materials from the forestry and paper industry.

Signal for investors and industry

We are delighted about the support from Industriklivet for our project in Örnsköldsvik. This support demonstrates the Swedish government's strong commitment to fossil-free eFuel production and also sends a clear signal to international investors and customers.

The project not only strengthens Sweden's position as a pioneer in the green energy sector, but also shows how local and resilient eFuel solutions can be scaled up in Europe.

Funding as part of European climate programs

The funding via Industriklivet is part of the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and Next Generation EU. Industriklivet is a government initiative run by the Swedish Energy Agency to accelerate the transition to a climate-neutral industry.
