MDA secures 3.3 million euros in seed financing

The Leipzig-based HealthTech start-up develops AI-based assistance systems for the operating theater and is already working with international MedTech groups.
Leipzig, May 22, 2025 - The Leipzig-based HealthTech startup MDA Medical Decision Alliance has raised 3.3 million euros in a seed financing round. The round was led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), with several experienced entrepreneurs and angel investors also participating. MDA develops AI-supported assistance systems for the operating theatre - with the aim of standardizing and scaling surgical knowledge and making it available worldwide.
Surgical knowledge as a structured database
MDA's solution is based on a key insight: there is not a lack of robots in surgery, but a lack of structured knowledge. While technical systems already provide established standards, many intraoperative decisions are still based on individual experience. This is precisely where MDA comes in.
Together with MDA, we have digitized our entire surgical technology. This gives other teams around the world access to 20 years of surgical experience - unique in this form to date.
Professor Markus Graefen from the Martini Clinic at the UKE
The systematic collection of expert knowledge, directly from the practice of leading surgeons, creates a unique database. This will be translated into AI-supported decision-making algorithms that will be able to support surgical teams in real time in the future. A kind of "virtual supervisor" will provide precise suggestions for action, even for complex cases.
First partnerships with medtech companies
MDA is already cooperating with three global medical technology manufacturers with the aim of making the next generation of surgical robots more intelligent. The "Virtual Proctor" platform developed by MDA enables clinics to access standardized workflows and visualizations based on decades of practical experience.
Growth strategy: team expansion and new partnerships
The capital from the financing round will be invested in expanding the team, establishing new clinic partnerships and further developing the AI models.
MDA combines medical depth, AI expertise and entrepreneurial experience. The reference database is a central building block for scalable, evidence-based OR support. This is where the transformative potential lies.
Dr. Lena-Sophie Schütter, HTGF
The founders Dr. Gunter Trojandt, Annett Christ and Daniel Bauer know the market: they successfully sold the Surgical Process Institute (SPI) to Johnson & Johnson back in 2017. With MDA, they are pursuing a consistent further development, away from process software and towards AI-based decision support in the operating room.
