Dutch company NOWOS receives growth capital to drive the repair and reuse of lithium-ion batteries in Europe

Amersfoort, April 9, 2025 - NOWOS, a European provider of repair and maintenance services for lithium-ion batteries, has successfully closed a €6 million financing round. The round was led by impact venture fund Shift4Good, with participation from Dutch investors Fair Capital Impact Fund and Goeie Grutten Impact Fund. A further 3 million euros in debt capital is to follow.

The financing marks a real milestone for CEO and serial entrepreneur Prins Doornekamp, who founded NOWOS in 2019. In 2024 alone, the company repaired 310,000 kilograms of battery models - the equivalent of 90,000 individual batteries.

This funding is a recognition of our work to date and gives us the means to accelerate our mission: To establish battery repair and reuse as the new standard in Europe.

Expansion into new markets and sectors

Since its foundation, NOWOS has initially specialized in batteries for micromobility, such as e-bikes, e-mopeds and kick scooters. Its customers include Dott, Felyx, Qwic, Dance, Fifteen, NIU, Phylion, TWS and Segway-Ninebot.

With the new financing, NOWOS is expanding its range of services to other areas such as

  • Material handling equipment (forklift trucks, AGVs)
  • Energy storage systems (ESS)
  • Power tools and garden equipment
  • Robotics and automated drone systems
  • Medical devices

Repair instead of replacement: ecologically and economically sensible

According to Alix Armour, the new Chief Impact Officer, over 80% of incoming batteries can currently be repaired. "This not only saves energy and materials, but is also economical: repairs are on average 55% cheaper than replacements," says Armour. In view of the EU target of recovering 70% of battery materials by 2030, the focus is increasingly shifting to repair.

NOWOS currently operates repair centers in the Netherlands and France as well as a partner location in the United Kingdom. A center will open in Poland in 2025, followed by a location in Germany in 2026. Further investments are being made in the expansion of the Battery Passport system and in the scaling of repair protocols for an even wider range of battery types and applications.

Strategic partnerships for sustainable growth

Shift4Good, lead investor in the round, is a global impact venture capital fund with a focus on sustainable transportation.

The circular economy is becoming a sector in its own right, particularly in resource-intensive transportation.

Shift4Good is supported by the impact investors Fair Capital Impact Fund and Goeie Grutten Impact Fund. Marije Schasfoort from Fair Capital Impact Fund emphasizes: "NOWOS is setting new standards for sustainable battery solutions in Europe. Their ability to grow at scale makes them an ideal partner."

The startup specializes in the repair, reconditioning, diagnosis and maintenance of lithium-ion batteries and also offers eco-engineering, storage and logistics services. Starting with micromobility, NOWOS is expanding into new markets such as energy storage solutions, logistics, heavy industry, consumer electronics, medical devices, robotics and automated drone systems.
