Outpost Bio receives $3.5M pre-seed

The deep-tech company Outpost Bio secures 3.5 million US dollars in pre-seed funding to systematically model the interaction between humans and the microbiome for the first time.

Outpost Bio aims to open up one of the most complex dimensions of the life sciences: human microbiology. The company develops models that not only look at human DNA, but also analyze the interactions between microbial communities, drugs and nutrients. These are precisely the processes that significantly influence therapeutic success and health.

The financing round of 3.5 million US dollars was co-led by Merantix Capital and Seedcamp. Other participants include OpenSeed VC as well as strategic family offices and angel investors.

Lab-in-the-loop

The core of the technology is a lab-in-the-loop platform. It combines automated wet labs with machine learning in a closed feedback cycle:

  1. Experiments generate functional microbiological data
  2. Models learn from this and identify new hypotheses
  3. The system decides which tests to run next

This creates a continuously growing, proprietary data set on real microbial functions in the human body

Relevance for pharma, food and consumer health

The platform is intended to help companies

  • make clinical developments less risky,
  • better predict drug reactions,
  • develop safer formulations,
  • and to specifically test the effect of ingredients such as prebiotics or plant-based active ingredients.

In this way, Outpost Bio addresses a central problem of modern research: many biological models only explain relationships correlatively, not causally.

The company is managed by Jenny Yang, who holds a doctorate from Oxford and has a background in clinical machine learning. The COO and co-founder is Alex Merwin, who previously played a leading role in the development of health and bio start-ups in the cloud environment. The team combines expertise in microbiology, data engineering and scalable ML infrastructure.

Why now?

Falling sequencing costs, faster automated experiments and more powerful AI models are creating the conditions to make microbial interactions measurable and predictable on a large scale for the first time.

Outpost Bio is thus positioning itself not just as another bio-AI startup, but as a provider of fundamental infrastructure for the next generation of data-driven biology.
