Replit reaches 9 billion valuation and wants to redefine vibe coding
The AI startup Replit has completed a new financing round of 400 million US dollars and is now valued at 9 billion US dollars. The company develops AI-supported programming tools that enable users to create applications without having to write traditional code themselves.
The financing round was led by venture capital investor Georgian. Other investors include Andreessen Horowitz and Coatue Management as well as celebrities such as Shaquille O'Neal and Jared Leto. The sovereign wealth fund Qatar Investment Authority also participated.
Replit intends to use the capital to drive forward its international expansion, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, and to expand its distribution. According to the company, Replit is currently heading for an annual recurring revenue (ARR) of USD 1 billion by the end of the year.
New generation of vibe coding
At the heart of the current product strategy is a new AI agent called Agent 4, which is intended to further develop the concept of vibe coding. This means that software is no longer primarily created using programming language, but using natural language, visual ideas and iterative collaboration with AI.
Replit takes an unusual approach: users work on a digital canvas surface on which they can draw mockups, sketch functions or work on ideas together with other team members, similar to a whiteboard. The AI then automatically translates this input into functioning software.
CEO Amjad Masad describes the goal as a collaborative development process between humans and machines: developers, designers and other employees should be able to create, test and directly deploy applications together with the AI.
Focus on non-programmers
Replit is deliberately not just positioning itself for traditional software developers. The company wants to give non-technical teams in particular access to software development.
Users can use simple selection options to create tables, data visualizations, internal tools or games, for example. The aim is to make the development of applications more like the design process of a graphics program than working in a traditional code editor.
Companies such as Zillow, Databricks, PayPal and Adobe are already using Replit for internal applications. At real estate company Zillow, for example, more than 7,000 internal apps have been created by employees who are often not professional developers themselves.
Strong competition in the market for AI programming
The market for AI-supported software development is growing rapidly and is increasingly dominated by large AI labs. Competition is particularly strong from products such as Claude Code from Anthropic.
The AI lab, founded by Dario Amodei and others, recently published a new model that attracted a great deal of attention in the industry and, according to market observers, already generates several billion dollars in annual revenue. Other competitors in the vibe coding sector include start-ups such as Cognition and Lovable as well as tools such as Codex and Cursor.
Replit therefore relies on simpler user interfaces and a stronger focus on business teams, while many competing products are geared more towards professional developers.
From refugee child to tech billionaire
The new valuation makes Replit CEO Amjad Masad a billionaire for the first time. According to estimates, his fortune now stands at around 2 billion US dollars.
Masad grew up in Amman, Jordan. His parents were refugees, his father comes from Palestine and his mother from Algeria. He began programming as a child after his father brought home a computer. Masad later worked as a developer at Facebook before founding Replit together with his wife.
However, the company itself also had to overcome difficult phases. Shortly before the launch of its first AI coding agent in 2024, Replit laid off around 30 employees and around half of the team left the company. At the time, Masad made a conscious decision to radically change strategy in favor of AI agents.
Today, Replit is considered one of the fastest growing companies in the field of AI-supported software development and is now at the forefront of a new form of programming.
