Schwarz Digits invests 11 billion euros in digital sovereignty.

Lübbenau becomes an AI hub. The new data center will house up to 100,000 GPUs for AI applications.

Schwarz Digits, the IT and digital division of the Schwarz Group, is starting the construction of one of Europe's most modern data centers in Lübbenau (Spreewald). With an investment volume of 11 billion euros, this is the largest single investment in the company's history. The project underlines the ambition to make Germany's digital infrastructure more independent, more efficient and more sustainable.

Data center of superlatives

A data center with a connected load of 200 megawatts will be built on the 13-hectare site of the former power plant by the end of 2027. The modular design will enable the installation of up to 100,000 GPUs in future, which will be used primarily for AI inference and training large models. It will be operated entirely with green electricity. From 2028, the waste heat generated will be fed into the city's district heating network, thereby strengthening both the digital and ecological infrastructure of the data center.

Germany needs computing power to play in the premier league of artificial intelligence. Projects like Schwarz Digits show that we have the necessary skills to strengthen the country's digital sovereignty.

Dr. Karsten Wildberger, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs

Strengthening European resilience

The new data center is part of Schwarz Digits' strategy to build an independent cloud infrastructure in Germany. STACKIT, the cloud provider of the Schwarz Group, will operate its fifth data center here. The offering is complemented by the company's own open source cloud, cyber security solutions from XM Cyber, AI cooperation with Aleph Alpha and secure communication solutions with Wire.

Lübbenau is more than just a data center - it is a central anchor point for Europe's digital sovereignty. Here we enable companies and citizens to retain control over their data.

Sustainability and regional responsibility

The project follows a brownfield strategy in which the former power plant site was renaturalized and reusable materials were recycled. Over 20,000 cubic meters of concrete, 110 tons of steel and 20 tons of wood were separated and returned to the economic cycle.

The data center uses state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly technologies: photovoltaic systems on the campus generate up to 520,000 kWh of renewable energy annually, while the Direct Liquid Cooling system efficiently feeds waste heat into the city's district heating network.

Significance for Germany and Europe

With its investment in Lübbenau, Schwarz Digits is setting standards for digital infrastructure in Germany and Europe. The data center provides the technological basis for AI applications at the highest level, strengthens the resilience of critical infrastructures and shows that European companies are able to implement hyperscalable solutions independently of foreign providers.
