Ulm start-up discontinues service

After a few months, the start-up My Weekly Market Online had to admit defeat and discontinue its service. It wanted to deliver the shopping from the weekly market to your home by bike, but the demand was too low.

At the top of the website is the red banner, inside it the sad news: the start-up My Weekly Market Online has discontinued its service at the end of the year, the reason given being insufficient demand.

The Ulm-based start-up only launched its service in February last year, so it only lasted ten months. The three founders wanted to make it easier for customers to shop at the weekly market around the corner, but not have to drive there themselves. Instead, with a minimum order value of 25 euros, the start-up bought groceries for its customers and delivered the fresh food to their doorstep until 9 p.m. After two weeks, 250 orders had already been received; 100 would have had to be placed each market day for the business to be profitable. A radius of 10 kilometres around the weekly market was served by the e-load bike or e-transporter.

Back in 2017, Michael Mayer came up with the idea. 30,000 euros he and his two partners Marcel Michelfelder and Dominik Kramer put according to own information in the project. The development of the service took three years. They quickly received support from local politicians such as the former mayor, who put them in touch with Sparkasse Ulm and the city. They also had the support of the weekly market traders themselves: "Of course, the traders also have to deal with the topic of digitalisation. Their positive interim conclusion has inspired us," Mayer told the Südwest Presse
