The Zoox electric car transports passengers without a driver. A cab service is set to launch in the USA this year.

Zoox was acquired by Amazon just last year, and now the first car has been unveiled. The self-driving electric car has been specially tailored to the passengers. Four people can sit in the model. Two sit opposite each other - similar to a gondola. There is no driver's seat and no steering wheel. The car travels at a top speed of 120 km/h. The batteries last up to 16 hours.

Zoox was founded in 2014. Amazon also hoped that its purchase last year would speed up parcel delivery. In San Francisco and Las Vegas, however, a cab service with Zoox cars is to be launched first. The launch is planned for this year. "Even though the vehicle is not yet ready for commercial use, this marks a milestone towards our vision of creating an autonomous robotaxi fleet and ride-hailing service," the start-up told CNBC.
