The Kiel-based software start-up successfully closes its Series A financing round. At the same time, it is expanding its advisory board and management team.

The software development platform Gitpod has raised 25 million euros. The Series A financing round was led by an old acquaintance: Gitpod co-founder and former CEO Tom Preston-Werner is putting capital into his former company via his investment vehicle Preston-Werner Ventures. All existing investors are also participating, with Shopify founder and CEO Tobi Lütke among the new investors.

Gitpod, founded in Kiel in 2020, is an open source platform for software development. With the money raised, Gitpod now wants to gradually move the coding process to the cloud. "Developers have moved almost all creative workflows to the cloud. Paradoxically, the software writing workflow itself has never left the local computer," explains Gitpod CEO and co-founder Johannes Landgraf: "Gitpod has set itself the goal of changing that."

In addition to the financing round, Gitpod also announced a number of personnel changes. Ex-CEO Preston-Werner and Juliet Bailin from existing investor General Catalyst are joining the start-up's advisory board. Mike Brevoort, Matthew Du Pont and Sara Parker have also joined the management team.
