4.5 million Series A for Klar2O

Health instead of plastic in a jar. Bruchsal start-up develops patented filter technology to combat invisible pollutants.
News by Marc Nemitz Marc Nemitz · Bruchsal, 29. September 2025

The Bruchsal-based start-up Klar2O has raised 4.5 million euros in a Series A financing round. The lead investor is FMC Beteiligungs KG Bremen. The company intends to use the capital to ramp up production of its water filter technology and drive forward the international market launch.

The focus is on the patented Smart Surface Technology, which is designed to reliably remove microplastics, nanoplastics and so-called "Forever Chemicals" (PFAS) from drinking water. Unlike conventional filter systems, the solution combines highly effective adsorption with low pressure loss. The filters are also regenerable and recyclable, which makes them particularly sustainable.

Nanoplastics in drinking water

A look at recent studies shows the relevance of the problem: in 2024, researchers found an average of 240,000 plastic fragments per liter of bottled water, around 90 percent of which were nanoplastic particles less than one micrometer in size [NIH, "Plastic particles in bottled water"]. These tiny particles can overcome biological barriers and have already been detected in human blood, urine and even organs. Recent findings also show plastic deposits in the brains of deceased Alzheimer's patients.

With this financing round, we want to revolutionize the entire drinking water market. We see Klar2O as the future standard for high-quality water filtration and it will be impossible to imagine the future without it.

Nanoplastics are therefore increasingly seen as a potential threat to health. In addition to the damage to health, consumers and entire economies are threatened with rising costs due to the long-term consequences.

From the pilot phase to scaling up

According to the start-up, the Smart Surface Technology stands out from previous filters due to three properties:

  • Selective binding of nanoplastics and pollutants
  • Low energy requirement due to low pressure loss
  • Sustainability through regenerability and recyclability

Klar2O thus addresses a global health problem that has gained a great deal of attention in recent years, but has so far only been inadequately solved.

This Series A phase is our scaling kick-off to place Klar2O on the global market and show everyone: Everyone can now drink plastic-free water thanks to Klar2O.

With the Series A financing of 4.5 million euros, Klar2O is one step closer to entering the global market. The start-up is positioning itself as a technology provider at the interface of health, environment and infrastructure and is thus meeting with growing awareness of the dangers of nanoplastics in everyday life. We already reported in 2021 about an investment by FMC in the start-up.
