Marvel Fusion cooperates with Ludwig Maximilian University

The university and the start-up want to conduct joint research into laser-based nuclear fusion. This could make the power supply emission-free.
The Munich-based start-up Marvel Fusion is collaborating with Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU). Over the next five years, they want to jointly research the laser-based nuclear fusion developed by Marvel Fusion and expand the laser system at LMU. This should enable experiments on laser-matter interaction and high-field ion acceleration. The Free State of Bavaria is supporting the cooperation with 2.5 million euros.
Moritz von der Linden, Karl-Georg Schlesinger, Georg Korn and Pasha Shabalin founded Marvel Fusion in 2019. In February of this year, the start-up raised 35 million euros from Earlybird, Athos Venture, Primepuls, Thistledown Capital, Taavet Hinrikus and Sten Tamviki. In the laser-based nuclear fusion process developed by Marvel Fusion, hydrogen and boron are fused together. The process releases energy that can be used to generate electricity.
"Laser-based fusion technology can make a decisive contribution to the energy transition and to European energy sovereignty because it enables the production of unlimited, CO2-free electricity," explains Georg Korn, physicist and Head of Technology at Marvel Fusion. "The cooperation with LMU is a milestone for Marvel Fusion because it brings us a big step closer to the goal of commercial electricity production using laser-based fusion technology."
