Matrix is leading a seed round to expand Meshcapade's AI solutions. These solutions transform images, videos, texts and sensor data into 3D humans in SMPL standard body format.

Tuebingen, Germany - Meshcapade, a startup specializing in AI solutions for modeling, analyzing and synthesizing 3D digital humans in motion, announced that it has raised $6 million in a seed round.

Matrix values founders who combine great vision with technical depth.

Dianna Kimball Berlin, Partner Matrix

The round was led by Matrix and included participation from a number of technology founders and investors, including Nate Mitchell (co-founder of Oculus), Matthew Ball (author of "The Metaverse"), William O'Farrell (co-founder of BodyLabs), Andrew Hamel (former VP Machine Learning at Amazon), Gary Bradski (CSO at OpenCV), and CLO, a provider of leading 3D clothing software. Diana Kimball Berlin of Matrix will join Meshcapade's board of directors.

As our lives become increasingly digitized, there is a growing need for accurate, scalable and portable 3D representations of ourselves in virtual spaces.

Naureen Mahmood, Co-Founder & CEO Meshcapade

Despite impressive progress in language models and generative AI, today's AI systems still struggle to understand human movements and expressions. Meshcapade aims to make technology more human by building the "digital human layer" of the internet. With their patented SMPL body model, they enable seamless integration of highly accurate digital humans across multiple industries. Through user-friendly APIs and tools, images, videos, 3D scans, motion data, and text can be transformed into 3D digital humans.

Meshcapade is an AI startup whose founders are pioneers in the field of 3D human modeling and motion. The company is headquartered in Tübingen, Germany, and was founded in 2018 by Naureen Mahmood, Michael J. Black and Talha Zaman. Their first institutional funding round supports their vision to provide fundamental models for human motion analysis and synthesis. Back in 2022, we reported in Startbase that the startup won the Max Planck Startup Prize.
