Climate-Tech Metafuels has completed a financing round of 24 million US dollars to drive forward the industrial production of sustainable synthetic aviation fuels. The aim is to establish a scalable alternative to fossil kerosene and accelerate the decarbonization of aviation.

Methanol-to-jet technology to close the production gap

In order to achieve the industry's climate targets, the global production of sustainable aviation fuels must increase more than 150-fold by 2050 - a demand that cannot be met with biogenic fuels alone. Metafuels is therefore focusing on so-called methanol-to-jet technology, which is intended to produce synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) on an industrial scale. The product aerobrew is about to be launched on the market.

Investors focus on commercialization and industrial scaling

The financing round is led by UVC Partners. The investors involved include Energy Impact Partners, Contrarian Ventures, RockCreek, Verve Ventures and Fortescue. The financing is intended to enable the transition from technological development to the first industrial plants.

First large-scale projects and parallel plant roll-out

The capital will flow in particular into commercial projects that are to be brought to the Final Investment Decision (FID) stage and then implemented. These include

  • Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED)
  • Commercial and financial project development
  • Preparation of a parallel roll-out of several production facilities in Europe and other markets

This expansion is becoming increasingly important, especially against the backdrop of rising regulatory SAF quotas.

Competitive costs as the key to decarbonizing aviation

Metafuels is pursuing the goal of offering sustainable aviation fuel at costs that can compete with fossil kerosene. According to CEO Saurabh Kapoor, aerobrew should enable airlines to reduce their emissions without having to fundamentally change existing operating models.

Investors also see considerable transformation potential in this: the technology could significantly improve the profitability of SAF and thus represent a key lever for CO₂-neutral flying.
