From there, the EU wants to keep a closer eye on tech companies. However, the plans have not yet been publicly confirmed.

According to media reports, the European Union is planning an embassy in Silicon Valley. This is according to internal documents leaked to the Handelsblatt are available. "An informed dialog with the private sector about its role and responsibility is an important part of external digital policy", according to the paper from the European External Action Service. The tech scene in Silicon Valley is to be monitored from San Francisco. Apparently, the EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has already informed the foreign ministers of the member states about the move, writes Handelsblatt. In doing so, the EU wants to pay more attention to the "geopolitics of new digital technologies".

The European External Action Service has been in existence since 2011 and is responsible for maintaining the EU's diplomatic relations with the rest of the world, currently in 139 offices. In the USA, the European Union is represented by an embassy in Washington D.C. and one at the United Nations in New York.
