Bugfoundation announces via its social networks that it has been sold to a subsidiary of the family-owned company Kupfer seven years after it was founded.

Since 2014, Baris Özel and Max Krämer have been campaigning for insects to be allowed to be processed in food in Germany. Since 2018 it has been approved and the two sell burgers made from buffalo worms with their start-up Bugfoundation. Now they have sold their company to Kupfer Innovative Food, a subsidiary of the family-owned company Kupfer from Ansbach. The Bugfoundation brand will be added to the company's product range; Kupfer Innovative Food was previously a distributor of the alternative burgers. The Ansbach-based company also invested in Bugfoundation together with the PHW Group, to which Wiesenhof belongs.

Bugfoundation announced the acquisition via social media, writing that it will "keep their brand in professional and devoted hands." Also, "We look forward to all that is to come! Stay tuned."

Bugfoundations Burger was first available in Brussels restaurants in 2018 after two years in development, then it premiered at Green Week in Berlin. It was only this year that a product relaunch took place. The burger has been available for purchase at Rewe and Penny so far, and in 4,000 stores in Germany, according to the startup.

Kupfer, a family-owned company, sells mainly meat and sausage products, while the subsidiary taking over Bugfoundation offers vegan alternatives under the Loz Veganoz brand.
