The Indian e-commerce platform Shiprocket has gone public. The company raised approximately 170 million U.S. dollars in its IPO and was valued at 1.1 billion U.S. dollars at the end of its first day of trading. For Bertelsmann India Investments, the IPO also marks the culmination—so far—of an investment journey that began back in 2015.

Shiprocket Celebrates Its Stock Market Debut in India

Shiprocket is now listed on the National Stock Exchange of India and the BSE. Significant interest was evident even before the offering. According to Bertelsmann Investments, the IPO was oversubscribed 100 times.

The first day of trading was equally strong. Shiprocket shares closed 48 percent above their offering price. By the end of the day, the company had reached a valuation of approximately 1.1 billion U.S. dollars.

For Bertelsmann Investments, the IPO also marks a success for its own long-term investment strategy in India.

From a startup with 1,500 customers to a billion-dollar company

Bertelsmann India Investments (BII) was the first institutional venture investor to invest in Shiprocket back in 2015. The scale of the business was very different back then: Shiprocket served around 1,500 customers and generated less than $2 million in revenue.

Today, the company has more than 214,000 active merchants and expects revenue of more than 200 million U.S. dollars for the current year. What began as a shipping solution for small and medium-sized merchants has evolved into a comprehensive e-commerce platform. Among other things, Shiprocket integrates shipping, fulfillment, checkout, and cross-border e-commerce into an AI-powered ecosystem.

Bertelsmann retains a stake of approximately 19 percent

It is noteworthy that the IPO does not mark a complete exit for Bertelsmann. BII continues to hold approximately 19 percent of Shiprocket and thus remains the company’s largest institutional investor.

Carsten Coesfeld, CEO of Bertelsmann Investments, views Shiprocket as an example of the group’s long-term investment approach. Bertelsmann supported the founding team early on and accompanied it through several strategic realignments.

In addition to BII, long-standing venture investors include Tribe Capital, March Capital, and KDT Ventures, among others. With the IPO, capital market investors such as SBI Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund, and Goldman Sachs joined the ranks.

A prime example of long-term venture capital?

The development is particularly interesting from a VC perspective. About eleven years passed between the first institutional investment and the IPO. During this time, Shiprocket didn’t just grow with its original business model. The company underwent several strategic evolutions and expanded from a single shipping solution into a platform covering key parts of the e-commerce value chain.

The IPO thus also illustrates just how long the path can be from an early-stage venture investment to the public capital market.

For BII, this patience could now pay off. At a valuation of 1.1 billion U.S. dollars, a stake of about 19 percent corresponds to a market value of approximately 209 million U.S. dollars. However, this is merely a theoretical snapshot based on the valuation at the end of the first trading day.

India is becoming a strategic investment market for Bertelsmann

The Shiprocket IPO is also part of Bertelsmann’s much broader commitment to India.

Bertelsmann India Investments was founded back in 2012 and, according to its own figures, now manages approximately one billion U.S. dollars. The focus is on startups in early growth phases, from Series A to Series C.

As part of its Boost strategy, Bertelsmann aims to invest more than 100 million U.S. dollars annually in India through BII. In 2026 alone, eight investments have been made so far, including seven follow-on investments.

As a result, India has long since ceased to be merely a sales market for Bertelsmann and has become an important hub for venture capital and long-term investments.

From Venture Investment to Publicly Traded Company

For the European startup ecosystem, Shiprocket’s IPO is interesting for another reason as well. It demonstrates that successful venture investments do not necessarily have to end with a sale to a strategic buyer or private equity investor.

The public capital market remains an important third option. Shiprocket is thus likely to become one of the more prominent examples of how long-term venture capital can develop in a dynamic growth market like India.
