Amazon plans to invest more than 16 billion euros in Germany by 2027. The U.S. technology company made the announcement at the German government’s “Invest in Germany Summit” in Berlin. A total of 4.8 billion euros alone is set to go toward expanding the cloud and AI infrastructure of Amazon Web Services. Other key areas include robotics research, logistics, satellite internet, and film production. According to the company, Amazon has already invested more than 100 billion euros in Germany since 2010.

Amazon Plans Further Billions in Investments in Germany

With this announcement, Amazon is continuing its expansion in Germany. The planned investments of more than 16 billion euros through 2027 are intended to strengthen various business units of the company. The focus is particularly on data centers, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure. In addition, Amazon intends to modernize its logistics facilities, establish new research initiatives, and fund additional media productions. David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, describes Germany as one of the company’s most important investment locations. The announced spending builds on investments already made. According to Amazon, the company has invested more than 100 billion euros in Germany since 2010. Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche sees the plans as a sign of the country’s appeal as a business location. In particular, high-performance data centers are a prerequisite for the further development of industrial AI applications. The announcement only partially reveals how the total 16 billion euros will be distributed among the individual business units.

4.8 billion euros for cloud and AI infrastructure

The largest single item with a specific figure relates to Amazon Web Services (AWS). For 2027, Amazon plans to invest 4.8 billion euros in the expansion of its AWS Europe (Frankfurt) cloud region. With this, the company aims to create additional capacity for cloud services and AI applications. The Frankfurt region has been operational since October 2014. According to AWS, the company has already invested a double-digit billion amount in the infrastructure there since its opening. The rising demand for computing power for AI models, data processing, and digital business applications is increasing the need for corresponding infrastructure. For startups and established companies alike, the availability of high-performance cloud services is a key factor in the development and scaling of digital business models. In addition to the existing cloud region, Amazon highlights the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, which has been generally available in Germany since January 2026. It is aimed specifically at organizations with special requirements regarding data control and digital sovereignty. According to the company, AWS employs approximately 3,000 people in Germany.

Second AI and Robotics Lab to Open in Berlin

In parallel with the expansion of its data centers, Amazon is expanding its research activities in Germany. The company is currently opening a second research lab for robotics and artificial intelligence in Berlin. According to Amazon, this doubles its research presence in the capital. The new facility will focus in particular on collaboration between humans and technical systems. The emphasis is on applications designed to improve workflows in logistics and support employees in their tasks. Additional highly specialized jobs are being created for the lab. The company is seeking, among others, scientists as well as hardware, software, and systems engineers specializing in robotics. A specific number of new research positions has not been disclosed. For Berlin as a hub for technology and research, this expansion means additional industrial research activities in the fields of AI and automation.

Amazon Leo Satellite Internet Set to Reach Germany

Another key focus is the development of the Amazon Leo satellite internet service. The network is designed to provide high-speed internet connections via satellites in low Earth orbit. Target groups include households, businesses, schools, hospitals, and public institutions in regions with insufficient terrestrial network coverage. Germany is also among the planned markets. Amazon is collaborating with the European space industry to build the satellite network. The company has secured 24 rocket launches with the European launch service provider Arianespace. European suppliers could also benefit from this. Amazon specifically highlights the German presence of ArianeGroup and the aerospace supplier MT Aerospace. The announcement did not specify a concrete date for the widespread availability of Amazon Leo in Germany.

More Than 3,000 Additional Jobs Through Logistics Projects

In addition to digital infrastructure, Amazon continues to invest in its German logistics network. Existing facilities are set to be modernized and equipped with more robotic technology. Modernization efforts at the logistics centers in Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund, and Werne are scheduled to be completed in 2027. At the locations in Koblenz, Pforzheim, and Rheinberg, similar work is set to continue through 2028. In addition, Amazon has opened a new logistics center in Zweibrücken. Another facility is currently under construction in Könnern, Saxony-Anhalt. According to the company, these previously announced logistics projects are expected to create a total of more than 3,000 additional jobs. Amazon already employs more than 40,000 permanent employees at over 100 locations in Germany. The investments in robotics are intended to improve both productivity and ergonomic working conditions. The company has not provided specific figures regarding the expected productivity gains.

Prime Video Announces More Than 15 German Productions

The media sector is also a key focus of investment. Amazon plans to further expand the production of local films and entertainment formats for Prime Video. More than 15 new productions in Germany have been announced through the end of 2027. These include, among others, the film adaptation of Sebastian Fitzek’s novel “Der erste letzte Tag,” the film “Drive – The Pretenders,” and the entertainment show “Holey Moley – Minigolf Extreme.” According to Amazon, the company has already produced more than 65 local titles in Germany. In doing so, the company has collaborated with UFA, Constantin Film, and Bavaria Film, among others. The new productions are intended to strengthen Germany as a hub for film and television and provide additional content for the international streaming platform.

Investments in Renewable Energy and Water Management

The expansion of data centers and logistics facilities also underscores the importance of a reliable energy supply. In this context, Amazon highlights projects for utilizing CO₂-free energy with a total capacity of more than 1.3 gigawatts in Germany. These include wind energy projects in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Once all projects are operational, the company states that they are projected to generate as much electricity as more than 1.8 million German households consume annually. AWS also relies on energy- and water-saving cooling technologies for its data centers. According to the company, German data centers are cooled using outside air about 95 percent of the time, without the need for water. In data centers planned for the future, rainwater collected on particularly hot days will be used for evaporative cooling. In addition, Amazon supports several water conservation projects in Hesse, including an initiative in the Vogelsberg region announced in collaboration with the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU).

A Sign of Investment in Germany’s Technology Ecosystem

With a planned investment of more than 16 billion euros, Amazon underscores Germany’s importance to its European business operations. Of particular relevance to the technology and startup ecosystem are the additional cloud capacities, research into robotics and AI, and the expansion of digital infrastructure. At the same time, companies in related sectors—such as data center technology, energy supply, logistics automation, and aerospace—stand to benefit. Amazon is also actively involved in training and certification programs. According to the company, more than 20,000 students in Germany have participated in AWS Tech Alliance programs since December 2023. With “Kiro for Students,” the company also offers students at participating universities limited-time free access to an AI-powered development environment. The announced investments in the billions highlight the importance of Germany for the further expansion of cloud, AI, and automation technologies. The number of additional jobs created and the overall economic impact will become clear as the individual projects are implemented.
