Biovox receives mid-six-figure sum

The company develops materials made of bioplastics. They are intended to save CO2 compared to fossil plastics.
Darmstadt-based Biovox has raised a mid-six-figure sum in a pre-seed financing round. Christoph Behn, Silvia Sommer and Dörte Kaschdailis, Moritz Kloss, Anne and Stefan Lemcke, and Matthias Knälmann invested as part of the Better Ventures angel club. In addition, the investor Auxxo and investors from the business angel network Frankfurt-Rhein-Main around Nikolaus D. Bayer participated. "With the fresh capital, we can tackle the expansion of our laboratories and technology. Initially, the first products are to go into series production," says co-founder Carmen Rommel.
Engineers Julian Lotz, Vinzenz Nienhaus and Rommel founded Biovox in 2020. The bioplastic composites the company is developing are said to be suitable for injection molding, extrusion and 3D printing and will be used in the medical, hygiene and food industries. Most of the plastics are biodegradable, according to the company. They are also said not to release persistent microplastics. Compared to conventional plastic production, the technology is said to produce fewer CO2 emissions.
Biovox's materials have so far been used in medical packaging or hygiene products, for example. In the long term, a product range is to be created that covers all medical classification levels. The company would even not stop at implants that degrade in the body in the future. "The use of conventional plastics and their subsequent incineration is a real climate problem. The EU Commission itself says, however, that the healthcare sector must not evade climate targets either. We offer a solution for this with low-CO2 bioplastics," says co-founder Julian Lotz.
