Block wants to expand in Europe

The start-up is bringing in a new boss. The financial start-up is also hiring more employees in Berlin.

The U.S. financial start-up Block, which was still called Square before December 2021, was founded back in 2009 by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Now that the latter has resigned from his Twitter post, he has set his sights on Block expanding to Europe with its cash app. So far, the app can only be used in the UK and the US.

For his plan, Dorsey is now hiring more employees in his Berlin office, as Finance Forward reported. So far, an office of the streaming service Tidal, which Dorsey bought, is located there. Now two positions for Block's cash app have also been advertised.

According to the media report, Dorsey has also found a new European head for his Cash app: Siobhán O'Connor was previously digital manager at Etsy, where she played an important role for the German market. Among other things, she was responsible for integrating the payment systems of German provider Dawanda into Etsy. Now she is expected to drive the European expansion of Dorsey's company.

The Cash app is one of the most successful financial apps in the world. It allows users to transfer money to each other. In addition, shares and cryptocurrencies can now be traded. For some time now, there has also been a Cash Card, with which customers can withdraw their money from ATMs. The company has been preparing for European expansion since 2020.
