Commercetools buys Frontastic

The Munich-based company became a unicorn this year, and has now bought the Münster-based start-up Frontastic.

Just collected 150 million euros, now the takeover: Commercetools has bought the Münster-based company Frontastic. In the future, Frontastic will continue to exist independently as a brand and be expanded. The company offers a composable front-end technology that works like a homepage editor and allows elements to be easily moved and inserted. Commercetools is active in the commerce software sector, and its customers include BASF and Porsche.

"We have been working in partnership with Frontastic since its founding, with a team that now numbers 40," says Dirk Hoerig, CEO of Commercetools. "Combined, our customers will not only have the most powerful engine to drive e-commerce on all channels in the future, but at the same time still have the tools at hand for marketing teams to create high-quality shopping experiences independently."

Fontastic founder Thomas Gottheil is also excited about his company's development: "Since our founding four years ago, our goal has been to help companies create exceptional shopping experiences - regardless of which commerce platform they use," he explains. Together with Henning Emmrich, Kore Nordmann, Tobias Schlitt and Manuel Pichler, Gottheil founded the start-up in 2017.

Commercetools has been around since 2006, and in 2015 it began to expand abroad: first the company opened an office in the US, followed by Australia, Asia and other European countries. It was only this year that Commercetools rose to become a unicorn.
