INERATEC secures 70 million euros

Thanks to investments from the EIB and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, INERATEC is driving forward the development of synthetic fuels and making e-fuels ready for the market.

Karlsruhe, 29 January 2025 - Karlsruhe-based INERATEC, a company specializing in the production of synthetic fuels (e-fuels), has closed a EUR 70 million financing round. The funds come from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst. This investment will support the construction of Europe's first commercial e-fuel production plant in Frankfurt and the further development of INERATEC's technology.

Major investment for sustainable aviation fuels

The financing is made up of two parts: The EIB is providing €40 million in venture debt under the InvestEU program, while Breakthrough Energy Catalyst is providing a grant of €30 million. The latter is a first for a German company and underlines INERATEC's technological maturity.

E-fuels are essential for a climate-neutral economy. With this financing, the EIB is supporting an innovative company in establishing a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

Nicola Beer, EIB Vice-President

The new production facility in Frankfurt is expected to be operational by 2025 and will be the largest of its kind in Europe with an annual capacity of up to 2,500 tons of e-fuels and e-chemicals. The focus will be on the production of e-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF), a sustainable alternative to fossil kerosene.

e-Fuels as the key to CO₂ reduction in aviation

INERATEC's e-Fuels are produced by using biogenic CO₂ and green hydrogen, making them virtually carbon neutral. Especially for sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as aviation, e-fuels are considered a promising solution.

Our pioneering plant shows that e-fuels are no longer just a concept, but a viable solution on an industrial scale. The reliable production of certifiable e-SAF will be possible in the near future and will make aviation more sustainable.

Tim Böltken, CEO of INERATEC

The EU ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation requires that at least 1.2 percent synthetic fuel be used in aviation from 2030 - a figure that is set to rise to 35 percent by 2050. INERATEC is positioning itself as a pioneer in this growing market with scalable, modular systems.

This pioneering project brings us a decisive step closer to the decarbonization of aviation.

Mario Fernandez, Head of Breakthrough Energy Catalyst

With this investment, INERATEC is providing a decisive impetus for the transformation of aviation and the reduction of CO₂ emissions. The successful financing also strengthens the EIB's role as a climate bank and supports the European Commission's RefuelEU objectives. The establishment of a commercial production facility for e-fuels in Germany lays an important foundation for a sustainable aviation industry.
