AP Ventures Closes $300 Million Fund for Industrial Technologies
London-based venture capital firm AP Ventures has closed its third fund with a total of $300 million. The capital will be invested in early-stage technology companies that make industrial processes more efficient, tap into new energy sources, and reduce dependence on critical raw materials. Since its first closing in 2024, the fund has already invested in 13 companies. Its portfolio includes startups in the fields of hydrogen, synthetic fuels, CO₂ utilization, and the industrial circular economy.
With the final closing of Fund III, AP Ventures secures additional capital for investments in technologies that often involve long development times and high demands for industrial implementation. The investor focuses on companies in the seed and Series A phases and supports them through to the commercial application of their technologies. This strategy is driven by the growing demand for solutions in energy-intensive industries. Rising electricity demand, strained raw material supply chains, and the increasing use of AI and automation are changing the requirements for industrial production systems.
Institutional investors are providing $300 million
The capital comes from existing and new institutional investors from various regions around the world. These include sovereign wealth funds, corporations, pension funds, and family offices. AP Ventures does not disclose individual investors or their respective investment amounts.
The fund first opened for investments in 2024. With the fundraising now complete, it has reached a total of $300 million in capital commitments.
“This final closing reflects the confidence of our existing and new investors in our ability to identify and support exceptional technology companies.”
Andrew Hinkly, Founder and Managing Partner of AP Ventures
The investor aims in particular to promote technologies that make industrial companies more productive and improve their supply security.
Focus on Hydrogen, CO₂ Utilization, and the Circular Economy
One area of focus is low-carbon energy sources such as hydrogen. This includes solutions for its production, storage, transportation, and use. Other investment areas include CO₂ capture and utilization, as well as new recycling processes that recover raw materials or utilize previously unused waste streams.
AP Ventures takes a technology-oriented approach. According to the investor, the key factors are whether a development solves a specific industrial problem and can be deployed economically over the long term.
Teragen Energy and Aether Fuels
Teragen Energy is among the portfolio companies to date. The company develops metal-supported solid-oxide fuel cells that can generate electricity directly at the point of consumption. One potential application is in data centers, where electricity demand continues to rise due to the expansion of AI applications. Decentralized energy supply could help provide additional capacity there and reduce dependence on existing power grids.
With Aether Fuels, the fund is also investing in a company that aims to convert industrial exhaust gases, biogas, and residual biomass into liquid fuels. These fuels are intended to be compatible with existing propulsion systems and offer an alternative to fossil fuels, particularly for aviation and shipping.
From Research to Industrial Application
AP Ventures was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in London. It has additional offices in Johannesburg and San Francisco. The team invests in early-stage companies worldwide and, according to its own statements, brings expertise in chemistry, materials science, engineering, and finance to the table.
We focus on technically differentiated companies that solve real operational problems in the industries and value chains in which we invest.
Kevin Eggers, Founder and Partner at AP Ventures
A key focus is on the phase between technological development and industrial commercialization. In this area, startups often face greater challenges than traditional software companies. New materials, chemical processes, or energy systems must be tested under real-world conditions, certified, and integrated into existing production processes.
Industrial technologies are gaining importance for venture capital
The new fund underscores institutional investors’ interest in technologies for industrial transformation. While many venture capital investments in recent years have focused on software and digital business models, physical technologies and industrial infrastructure are increasingly taking center stage.
There are several reasons for this. Energy-intensive companies must control their production costs, reduce emissions, and secure their supply of raw materials. At the same time, digitization and the expansion of AI infrastructure are driving up the demand for a reliable energy supply.
With its $300 million fund, AP Ventures is betting that new industrial technology markets will emerge from these challenges.
