The Berlin start-up Jodel is earning less money than it is spending. In 2020, the company posted a net loss for the year of around two million euros. According to research by German Startups cost a total of around eleven million euros.
Yodel has done a lot to bring in more money in recent years. In 2020, the start-up generated its revenue almost exclusively in Germany. Advertising customers have been able to place ads in the app for four years. Many brands place ads on the platform, which primarily reach young users between the ages of 18 and 30. This is also the company's usual target group - the app was originally launched as a student offering. However, Yodel also earns money from other sources. A premium function has been available since the beginning of 2021.
In 2018, Yodel posted its highest annual loss to date, amounting to 5.2 million euros. In the first year since it was founded, this amounted to just under 271,000 euros, compared to around 759,000 euros in 2015. In 2016, the loss was already 1.4 million euros, and in 2017 it was 2.8 million euros.
Founded in 2014 by Avellan Borgmeyer, the social media app allows users to publish posts anonymously and display them to app users in their immediate vicinity. Since then, the platform for witty sayings and local tips for going out has grown.
In February 2021, the Chinese gaming group Netease acquired a 20 percent stake in Yodel. At this point, Yodel had already raised ten million euros, including from Global Founders Capital and Atlantic Internet. Over seven million people are said to use the platform.
