Nomos Receives 20 Million Euros for AI-Native Energy Platform
The Berlin-based energy startup Nomos has raised 20 million euros. The funding round is led by Index Ventures. Other participating business angels include Markus Villig, founder of Bolt; UiPath founder Daniel Dines; and Tomas Okmanas, co-founder of Nord Security. Nomos plans to use the capital to expand its team and scale its platform, which aims to more closely connect residential solar systems, battery storage, and electric vehicles to the European electricity market.
Households Are Becoming Part of the Electricity Market
Nomos is capitalizing on a trend that is gaining importance as renewable energy expands: More and more households have their own energy systems. Solar panels generate electricity, battery storage systems can provide it at a later time, and electric vehicles allow for flexible control over when they are charged. However, Nomos argues that a large portion of this flexibility has not yet been utilized in the electricity market. The company therefore aims to coordinate when households consume, store, or sell electricity.
For example, batteries could be charged when plenty of solar power is available and electricity prices are correspondingly low. Electric vehicles, in turn, could be charged primarily during off-peak hours. This is expected to result in lower electricity costs for households and additional revenue opportunities. At the same time, this flexibility could help balance out fluctuations in the power grid caused by renewable energy sources.
Nomos Is Developing Its Own Operating System for Energy Providers
Technologically, the company is taking a full-stack approach to achieve this. Nomos is already a regulated electricity supplier and balancing group manager in Germany. At the same time, the startup is developing the necessary software in-house. At the heart of this is the so-called “Nomos OS.” The operating system is designed to automate as many processes as possible—processes for which energy providers traditionally require large teams.
These include, among other things, forecasts of electricity consumption by individual households, electricity trading, liquidity management, and hedging against price fluctuations. Added to this are classic processes of an energy supplier such as market communication, meter data processing, billing, and customer service.
Nomos specifically relies on automation and agent-based AI. According to the company, the challenge lies in connecting the various processes with one another. For example, a trading decision can impact liquidity, while missing meter readings, in turn, affect billing.
Behind-the-Scenes Electricity Supply for Other Brands
However, Nomos does not intend to market its infrastructure exclusively through its own consumer brand. Instead, the company collaborates with manufacturers and installers of energy technology. These partners can offer their customers electricity products under their own brand, while Nomos handles the electricity supply and the associated operational processes behind the scenes.
In this way, the startup positions itself as an infrastructure platform connecting households, energy companies, and the electricity market. According to the company, traditional electricity supply and the marketing of solar power are already available. The next steps will involve integrating battery storage and electric vehicles more closely into flexible electricity trading.
20 Million Euros for Scaling
With the 20 million euros it has now raised, Nomos plans primarily to expand its team in Berlin and scale its existing infrastructure. Back in October 2024, we reported here on Startbase about a successful funding round of 2.1 million euros for the startup.
According to Nomos, the company aims to build Europe’s largest energy company by connecting millions of decentralized energy systems from households to the electricity market. This approach aligns with an energy market that is becoming increasingly decentralized due to the expansion of solar energy, battery storage, and electric mobility. This, in turn, increases the potential to better align consumption and storage with fluctuating electricity prices and the availability of renewable energy.
The key factor for Nomos will be whether the complex regulatory and operational processes of an energy provider can actually be automated to such an extent that the company can scale its platform with relatively lean structures. The funding from Index Ventures now provides the Berlin-based startup with additional capital to implement this very approach on a larger scale.
