signteq Secures Seven-Figure Funding

The Austrian RegTech company signteq has closed a seven-figure funding round. New to the team is entrepreneur and software developer Peter Steinberger, known for PSPDFKit and OpenClaw. Other investors include Runtastic co-founder Rene Giretzlehner, Bernhard Klemen, FMMS Holding, and additional investors. Existing shareholder Compass Group is also increasing its investment. signteq plans to use the capital to expand internationally and extend its digital identity infrastructure to include the verification of AI agents.

From KYC to “Know Your Agent”

Since 2019, signteq has been developing infrastructure for digital identities, KYC and KYB processes, compliance, and legally binding digital transactions.

With the increasing prevalence of autonomously operating AI systems, the company now sees an additional need. In the future, AI agents, in addition to people and companies, will also be assigned a verifiable digital identity.

signteq refers to this approach as “Know Your Agent,” or KYA for short. The technology is designed to make it traceable which AI agent is performing an action, on whose behalf it is acting, and what permissions it has.

In doing so, the company is applying principles from the identity verification of individuals and companies to autonomous software systems.

AI Agents Need Verifiable Authorizations

The backdrop to this is the evolution of AI systems from mere assistants to agents that act with increasing autonomy. These agents can interact with digital services, exchange information, and potentially initiate transactions on behalf of users or companies.

This raises a new question of trust. A digital service no longer needs to determine solely who the person or which company is behind a transaction. In the future, it could also be crucial to determine whether an AI agent has actually been authorized to perform a specific action.

This is where signteq aims to expand its existing identity and compliance infrastructure. An agent’s identity, mandate, and specific authorizations are to become digitally verifiable. However, the company has not yet provided details on the technical implementation of the KYA approach in its announcement.

Peter Steinberger Joins as an Investor

Among the new investors is Peter Steinberger. The Austrian developer and entrepreneur founded, among other companies, the software firm PSPDFKit and is also known for OpenClaw. Also participating in the round are Runtastic co-founder Rene Giretzlehner, Bernhard Klemen, and FMMS Holding, which is backed by Franz-Mayr-Melnhof-Saurau Beteiligungs GmbH. Other investors, whose names have not been disclosed, are also part of the round.

At the same time, existing shareholder Compass Group is expanding its stake in signteq. The company has not disclosed the exact amount of the funding round. signteq merely refers to it as a seven-figure investment.

Expansion into Additional Markets

The new capital is intended, on the one hand, to accelerate international expansion. On the other hand, signteq aims to further develop its technological infrastructure and build out its new KYA division. In doing so, the company is deliberately positioning itself within the European regulatory landscape. signteq is further developing its existing platform with an eye toward the European EUDI Wallet, eIDAS 2.0, and the new European anti-money laundering regulations, among other things.

The combination of digital identity, compliance, and legally binding transactions is set to be supplemented by AI agents in the future.
