Uber Eats plans to expand into 70 German cities

The company plans to significantly expand its food delivery business in Germany by the end of the year.

Uber Eats plans to operate its delivery service in a total of 70 German cities, as reported by the news portal Bloomberg. After Delivery Hero exited its German business, Uber Eats is now looking to expand heavily in Germany.

So far, the delivery service is active in 14 major German cities. Among them are Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Düsseldorf. This year, about 50 more cities are to be added.

According to Eve Henrikson, Uber Delivery's head of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the expansion comes as demand for food delivery services is high. "That gives us the confidence to continue to expand," Henrikson said. Uber Eats' model relies on a mix of brokering orders from restaurants to delivery services and food deliveries with its own logistics partners. According to Henrikson, the advantage over competing delivery services is that cooperating restaurants don't necessarily need their own vehicles. This is because Uber Eats can draw on a network of couriers.
