McMakler apparently lays off more than 100 employees

According to a media report, the start-up is laying off 100 employees. It is already the second major wave of redundancies in just a few months.

The Berlin real estate start-up McMakler is laying off 100 employees for operational reasons and allowing up to 100 fixed-term contracts and probationary periods to expire. This is reported by Gründerszene citing an internal email and meeting that took place at the company on Monday morning. Before the dismissal, almost 1,000 people worked at the start-up, which was founded in 2015. Back in July, 120 employees had to leave.

McMakler was valued at 800 million euros in January and could become a unicorn. Since 2015, around 250 million euros have been invested in the start-up, which aims to make the real estate industry more digital. For example, the company offers tools to coordinate appointments and create apartment exposés. The start-up also claims to employ more than 450 of its own real estate agents. According to McMakler, it generated a turnover of 92 million euros last year, which corresponds to an increase of 70 percent compared to 2020.

According to Gründerszene, the company did not give specific reasons for the redundancies. A spokesperson told the magazine that the market situation was difficult. In the report, insiders speak of failed cost-cutting measures in the summer and a market environment that is currently deterring investors.
